Office Secret Santa: A Field Guide for People Who Don't Want to Be the Worst Gift

The mechanics of office Secret Santa are slightly cursed by design. You're given a budget that's small enough to discourage effort, a colleague whose tastes you don't really know, and a public unwrapping where the gift will be judged in front of everyone. Most years, most gifts are forgotten by January — a candle, a mug, a notebook nobody writes in.

The trick to not being the worst gift on the table is to send something the colleague actually uses through Q1. Below: a short list, sorted by colleague type, all under or at the typical Secret Santa budget cap.

If the slip says: someone you barely know

The 550ml Field Bottle, ₹499. Genuinely useful, four colours so you can pick something safe, doesn't presume anything about their personality. They'll use it at their desk for the rest of the year. Pair it with a one-line note: "Pre-warm it with boiling water for two minutes before pouring — adds two hours of heat retention." A small piece of insider knowledge looks thoughtful.

If the slip says: someone with a sense of humour

The FTS Coffee Mug, ₹349. The mug that says what they're thinking on a Monday at 9:47am. It earns the laugh on opening and gets used through every Q1 afterwards. Slightly risky if the colleague is senior or if HR is in the room — use judgment.

If the slip says: someone who actually cooks

A small tin of Lakadong turmeric from the Adviah range, around ₹300. Three times the curcumin of supermarket turmeric. The kind of thing a cook will use within a week and remember you for at the next office potluck. Reads as expensive without being expensive.

If the slip says: someone who travels for work

If the slip says: someone with a dog

A Best Dog Ever Bandana, ₹399. Cotton-blend, adjustable, machine washable. The colleague will photograph the dog wearing it within 24 hours, mention you in the caption, and the rest of the office will know you got Secret Santa right.

If the slip says: someone you actively dislike

A single Evil Eye charm from the set (the set is ₹249 for four, so you can split it). A polite, vaguely culturally weighty gift that signals nothing in particular. They can wear it on their bag and you've checked the box without lying.

If the slip says: senior leadership

The 1200ml Travel Tumbler, ₹799. The full-day capacity option — eight colours, replaceable parts, fits a car cup holder. The kind of gift that quietly reads as expensive and lasts long enough to be remembered. Or skip Secret Santa entirely and gift to charity in their name, depending on the political weather at your office.

One thing not to do

Don't gift wrapped chocolate, candles, or notebooks. Three reasons:

Chocolate assumes the recipient eats sugar, which an increasing number of colleagues don't. It also gets shared around the office within an hour, so the colleague never actually receives it.

Candles are the default "I don't know this person" gift. The colleague has received six candles in their career and lit one of them. They sit in a drawer until they're regifted.

Notebooks are the default for executives in tech. Every drawer has fifteen unused ones from previous offsites. Yours will be the sixteenth.

Logistics

Order at least a week before the office party. Everything in the Mawlaii catalogue ships in plain printed packaging that doesn't need extra wrapping.
